A safety management system (SMS) is your management system for the management of safety risks associated with your organization. It includes your systematic procedures, practices, and policies. They must be documented, monitored, measured, and analyzed.
The key word in the above paragraph is; “your.” There is no such thing as an off-the-shelf SMS. A properly designed SMS is appropriate to the size and complexity of your operation. It must address the risk associated with your day-to-day operational environment.
